Pillars are designed for long-burning sessions. In fact, don't even think about lighting the larger of these candles for less than a few hours at a time. The small version, however, can be burned for shorter periods.
To get the very best out of your pillar, it needs to burn until the melt pool reaches close to the edge of the candle. Burning for shorter periods of time can result in a narrow tunnel burning down the middle of the candle and the wax on the outside of the candle not being consumed.
To extinguish your candle without smoking. use the wood end of a matchstick to push the wick into the melted wax pool, and then stand the wick back up before the wax solidifies, ready to light again.
If your candle has a rim of wax at the top edge when you extinguish it, gently "hug" the candle and push the rim inwards towards the wick while the wax is still warm and pliable. DO NOT attempt to hug your candle while the wick is lit.
